Connected to Jesus: “I am the vine; you are the branches.”
キリストに結ばれている：「私はぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。」

GOSPEL LESSON: John 15:1–8
1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2Every branch of mine that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 		福音書　ヨハネ 15:1-8
15:1 「わたしはまことのぶどうの木、わたしの父は農夫である。 15:2 わたしにつながっていながら、実を結ばない枝はみな、父が取り除かれる。しかし、実を結ぶものはみな、いよいよ豊かに実を結ぶように手入れをなさる。15:3 わたしの話した言葉によって、あなたがたは既に清くなっている。15:4 わたしにつながっていなさい。わたしもあなたがたにつながっている。ぶどうの枝が、木につながっていなければ、自分では実を結ぶことができないように、あなたがたも、わたしにつながっていなければ、実を結ぶことができない。

15:5 わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。人がわたしにつながっており、わたしもその人につながっていれば、その人は豊かに実を結ぶ。わたしを離れては、あなたがたは何もできないからである。15:6 わたしにつながっていない人がいれば、枝のように外に投げ捨てられて枯れる。そして、集められ、火に投げ入れられて焼かれてしまう。15:7 あなたがたがわたしにつながっており、わたしの言葉があなたがたの内にいつもあるならば、望むものを何でも願いなさい。そうすればかなえられる。15:8 あなたがたが豊かに実を結び、わたしの弟子となるなら、それによって、わたしの父は栄光をお受けになる。

The vine and the branches image is a wonderful way to see our relationship with and connection to and dependence on Jesus. ぶどうの木とその枝という例えは、私達のイエス様との関係とそのつながりをよく現します。 We are connected directly to Jesus. 私達は直接にイエス様とつながっています。 That is where we get nourishment for salvation and for sanctification and for spiritual growth and life. そこから栄養をいただきます。その栄養は私達を救い、清く聖なるものとし、霊的な成長とその人生の為です。 We are directly connected to Jesus through faith, and so we get the fullness of his love and grace and mercy.信仰によって直接につながっているので、キリストとの完全な愛と恵みと憐れみをいただきます。

If we are not connected directly to Jesus, then there would be no fruit. もし私達が直接、イエス様につながれていなければ実を結びません。 If you cut a branch off a tree in the springtime, it will not produce fruit in the fall. 春の季節に木から枝を切り取ったら、秋になりますと実を結びません。 The same is true with our spiritual lives. 私達の霊的な人生も同じです。 The fruit is love. その実とは愛です。 The fruit, the harvest of the Christian life is love. その実、キリスト信者の人生の収穫とは愛です。 The purpose of our lives is love. 私達の人生の目的とは愛です。 If we stay connected to Christ, his love will be in us and it will produce love in our lives. キリストにつながれ続けましたら、彼の愛が私達の内にあり、私達の人生の中で愛を結びます。 We will live the life as a disciple. 私達が弟子として生きるのです。 It is not that this love saves us, as if saved by good works. この愛が私達を救う訳ではありません。なぜなら私達が良い行いによって救われていないからです。 Love in our lives is evidence that we are connected to Jesus. しかし、私達の人生の中の愛とは、私達がイエス様とつながれている証拠(しょうこ)になります。 If we have no love, then people will not believe that we are Christians. もし私達には愛がなければ、他の人は私達がキリスト信者である事を信じられません。 In the same way, you know that a tree is an apple tree because it bears apples. 同じように、ある木がりんごの木であると分かるのは、その木がりんごを結ぶからです。 The fruit of the vine or the apple of the tree is the purpose of that vine or tree. ぶどうの木のぶどうやりんごの木のりんごは、その木の目的です。 If there is not fruit, then the tree or vine is worthless to the farmer. 実がなければ、その木は農夫にとっては役に立ちません。 A branch that bears no fruit is worthless, it is cut off. 実を結ばない枝は無駄で切り離されています。 The purpose of our lives is love. 私達の人生の目的は愛です。 A life that has no fruit of love is worthless.愛の実がない人生には価値がありません。

I used to help my father in the yard. 子供の時代、私はお父さんの庭の手入れを手伝いました。 We had a couple of apple trees. りんごの木がありました。 In late winter, my father cut off all the branches that were not connected directly to the big limbs, because they would not produce apples. 春先に、お父さんは大きい枝に直接つながれていない小さい枝を切ってしまいました。その枝がりんごを結ぶ事が出来ないからです。 The branches that were cut off would fall to the ground. 切られた枝が地面に落ちます。 My job was to pick up all the branches that were cut off and put them in a big pile to be burnt. 僕の仕事とは、落ちた枝を集めて一つの所に置きます。それでお父さんはそれを燃やしました。Then the ashes were thrown into the compost heap. 灰をコンポストに入れました。 Jesus said, vs.6, “6If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.” イエス様は言われました、「15:6 わたしにつながっていない人がいれば、枝のように外に投げ捨てられて枯れる。そして、集められ、火に投げ入れられて焼かれてしまう。」 This is a parable, and from other similar parables in the Bible, the meaning is quite clear: that fire is hell. これは例えです。聖書の中のほかの例えで分かるのは、その火に投げ入れることは地獄です。 To be separated from God is damnation. 神様から離れた状態とは滅(ほろ)びです。 There is no life apart from God; there is no fruit acceptable to God when separated from Jesus Christ.神様から離れたら命がありません、イエス･キリストから離れた実は神様にふさわしくありません。

Jesus said, 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.” God is the Gardener. イエス様は言われました、15:1 「私はまことのぶどうの木、私の父は農夫である」と。 God loves and takes good care of his garden, his vines, his trees, his creatures and us. 神様は御自分の畑を愛して、それを大事にします。その畑、そのぶどうの木とすべての木、御自分の動物も、私達もそうです。 He loves even those braches that are pruned off. 枯れている、切って捨てられた枝をも愛します。 And that is why he sent Jesus to this world that he loved. それで、神様は御自分の御子イエス様をこの愛する世に送りました。 Not to burn but to gather and heal and make alive. 集めて燃やす為にではなくて、集めて、癒して、生かす為です。 And just as Jesus was born a child to be like we are, on the cross he became like the withering and dead branches that we are. そして、イエス様が私達と同じようになる為に赤ちゃんとして産まれたように、今度、十字架上で、枯れている死んだ枝である私達と同じようになりました。 With the sin of the world upon himself, he was pruned. 御自分の上に世の罪を持って、選定され、切り捨てられました。 When dying on the cross, he felt that agony and cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” そして、十字架上でその苦しみを感じて叫びました、「わが神、わが神、なぜ私をお見捨てになったのですか」と。 Then in his death and resurrection, he gathered us, not to be burn and destroyed, but to be forgiven and made alive and to bear fruit. そして、その死と復活によって、私達を集めました。燃やして破壊する為にではなくて、赦す為に、活かす為に、実を結ぶ為に私達を集めました。

When we believe in Christ, we are connected to the vine. 私達がキリストを信じる時、私達がそのぶどうの木につながれています。 This is how Christ gives us his love. これによってキリストが私達にご自分の愛を下さいます。 His love is first of all forgiveness. その愛とは、先ず先に、赦しです。 This forgiveness is stronger than all our sin. この赦しは私達のすべての罪より強いです。 To be connected to Christ is to know that forgiveness. キリストにつながれる事とは、この赦しを知る事です。 Even though we may continue to sin, even though we feel unworthy, God’s grace is greater than our sin. 私達が罪を犯し続けても、自分に価値がないと感じても、神様の恵みが私達の罪より強いです。 That grace is so great and forgiving that he does not cut us off as we should be. 神様の偉大なる恵みは偉大なる赦しであるので、切り捨てるべき私達を見捨てません。 That is because he has hope in us. 何故ならば、私達に対して希望を持っているからです。 That is what love is. それは愛です。 That is what love does. 愛はそのような事をするのです。

Love can take many shapes and forms. 愛には多くの形と表現があります。 Using the images in today’s Gospel reading, love is being connected to other people. 今日の福音書のイメージを借りて、愛は他の人とつながれている事です。 Therefore there is kindness and concern and forgiveness and dialog and help and charity. ですから、親切と関心と赦しと会話と助けとチャリティがあります。 It overcomes our selfish self-centeredness that would not share fruit with others. それで、自分の実を他の人と分かち合いたくない、自己中心な自分をのり越えられます。 It is a love that does not want to cut others off, but even wants to restore those who have fallen away.この愛は、他の人を切り捨てたくないで、更に、落とした者を拾って復興したいと思います。

And so our life as a Christian, our life as a human being in this world, has its power and purpose and blessing in the words of Jesus Christ. それで、私達のクリスチャンとしての活き方、又、この世の中に生きている人間の活き方には、イエス･キリストの言葉には、力と目的と祝福があります。 Jesus said, “I am the Vine, you are the branches.” イエス様は言われました、「私はぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。」
