Get ready for Christmas. クリスマスの準備をしましょう。 Get ready for the coming of Christ. キリストの到着の為に準備しましょう。 Christ is coming at Christmas, at the end of the world, and today he comes into our hearts and lives. キリストが来られるのは、クリスマスの時、世の最後に、そして、今日も私達の心と人生に来られます。 Get ready for the coming of Christ. キリストの到着の為に準備しましょう。 This was the message of both the Prophet Isaiah and John the Baptist. “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” 預言者イザヤもバプテスマのヨハネも、この同じメッセージを述べ伝えました:「主の道を整え、／その道筋をまっすぐにせよ。」と。

Sometimes it seems that the roads that we have to travel in life are not straight. 私達の人生の歩む道も、真っすぐではないでしょう。They are crooked. They are in the wilderness. The road is rough. There are valleys and mountains. 曲がったり、荒れ野の中で、凸凹で、谷も山もあります。 Our life is filled with hardships and sorrows: 人生は苦労と悲しみでいっぱいです： economic, social, political, personal, physical, emotional, inter-personal, educational. 経済的、社会的、政治的、個人的、健康の状態、精神的、人間関係、教育の問題など。 I suppose these challenges can make life more interesting, but can also bring great pain and the despair of ever reaching our goals in life.　このような チャレンジによって人生が面白くなるでしょうが、同時に、大きいな痛みや人生の 目的に到達出来るかどうかの悩みや絶望もあるでしょう。

The Prophet Isaiah and John the Baptist however are not speaking of only those problems, they are also speaking of the spiritual problem we have. しかし、預言者イザヤとバプテスマのヨハネは、このような問題だけではなく、私達にある霊的な問題についても語ります。 The road to God is not straight. 神様への道は真っすぐではないからです。 In fact, the road has been made so crooked by sin that it has become impossible for people to get to God because they cannot find the right road without the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 実際に罪の為に、その道が大変曲がってきましたので、人は神様のもとに行く事が出来ません、何故ならば、聖霊の導きがなければ、その正しい道を見つけられません。 And without the Holy Spirit, many people have given up on God. それで、聖霊がいないと、多くの人々は神様の事をあきらめてしまいました。 Many people no longer even care if they ever get to heaven. 多くの人々は、自分が天国に行く事にさえ、もう関心をもっていません。 They are so lost in sin.　そんなに人が罪の中に失われているからです。

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 洗礼者ヨハネが荒れ野に現れて、罪の赦しを得させるために悔い改めの洗礼を宣べ伝えた。He said “Repent!” 「悔い改めなさい」と言いました。 Repentance in the Bible means to get back on the right road. 聖書の中では、悔い改めとは、正しい道に戻る事です。 Forgiveness of sins means that we are now headed in the right direction toward the target. 罪の赦しとは、今、正しい方向に進んでいる事と意味します。 However, even with all his preaching and baptizing, John really felt his own helplessness. しかし、バプテスマのヨハネが沢山　説教したり洗礼をほどこしたりしても、実は、自分の無力さを感じました。 He could proclaim that the Messiah Savior was coming, but he knew that he himself could not save anyone. 自分が救い主のメシアの降臨を述べ伝える事が出来ますが、自分の力で誰も救う事が出来ないと分かりました。 He was the most holy of men, living his life in harmony with God, but still his holiness could not save anyone. バプテスマのヨハネは最も聖なる人で、自分の生き方で神様の御心に従いましたが、自分の聖さで別の人を救う事が出来ませんでした。 He expressed it this way: このようにそれを表現しました: “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”　「わたしよりも優れた方が、後から来られる。わたしは、かがんでその方の履物のひもを解く値打ちもない。1:8 わたしは水であなたたちに洗礼を授けたが、その方は聖霊で洗礼をお授けになる。」

Sandals and shoes are made for walking. 靴とサンダルの履物は、歩く為の物です。 But when Jesus came to save us, at first he came as a child without shoes, rather he was laid in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. しかし、イエス様が私達を救う為に来られた時、最初に靴のない赤ちゃんで、かいばおけに寝かされせて布に包まれていました。 If untying sandals is the job of the lowest slave, then Jesus showed his humility when he washed the feet of the disciples. もし履物のひもを解く仕事が一番身分の低い奴隷の仕事でしたら、イエス様は御自分のけんそんを表して、弟子達の足を洗いました。 He said this was the way that the disciples should serve each other: in humility and love and in service to one another. それは、弟子達も、けんそんと愛と奉仕を持って、お互いに使い会う事を教えました。 There are a couple of times in the New Testament when we see Jesus without sandals. イエス様は靴をはかない時もありました。 One was when the woman washed his feet with her tears and dried them with her hair. 一回は、ある女の人がイエス様の足を涙でぬらして自分の髪の毛でそれを乾かす時がありました。 The other was when he was on the cross. もう一回とは、十字架上にいる時です。 His sandals had been removed in order to drive the nail into his feet to put him on the cross. 十字架につける為に、足に釘を打つ為に、その履物が抜がされました。 Feet are for walking, and for Christ, the path he had to take was the path of the cross. 足は歩く為です。キリストの場合には、自分の道は十字架への道でした。 This is the path that leads first to death and hell, then to the forgiveness of sin, to the resurrection, and to life eternal.　その道に至るのは、先ず、死と地獄でした。それから罪の赦しまで、復活まで、永遠の命まででした。

John the Baptist said, “8I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” バプテスマのヨハネは言いました、「8 わたしは水であなたたちに洗礼を授(さず)けたが、その方は聖霊で洗礼をお授けになる。」 The work of the Holy Spirit is to show us the path. 聖霊の働きとは、私達にその道を表す事です。 From the waters of Baptism, we arise clean and forgiven. 洗礼の水から上がって、私達は清くなり、その罪は赦されています。 The Holy Spirit reveals that Jesus is the Savior. 聖霊は、イエス様が救い主であると明らかにします。 This is the faith which leads us to repent. この信仰があるので、私達は悔い改めます。 We daily repent and daily start again on our journey in life with Christ. 毎日悔い改めて、再びキリストと共に人生の旅を続けます。 In Jesus’ death and resurrection, God stoops down to loose the bonds of sin that the best efforts of John the Baptist could not effect. 　バプテスマのヨハネが出来ませんでしたが、イエス様の死と復活によって、神様はこの地上にかがんで来られて、私達の罪の束縛を解いて下さいます。

Because of sin, our own sin and the sin of others, the road in life is not straight and smooth. 罪が有るので、それは私達の罪や他の人の罪の為にも、人生の道が真っすぐで、平ではありません。 However, we believe and trust the Good News that in Christ the crooked is straightened and the rough places are made smooth. しかし、私達が福音を信じて信頼します。その福音とは、キリストによって、曲がっている物が真っすぐに、凸凹の所がスムーズになる事です。 And so Christ has come straight to us! それで、キリストは私達に真っすぐに来られました。Now there is power to change our paths and the paths that we walk with other people. 私達の道を変える力があり、他の人と共に歩く道をも変える力があります。 We make the paths of other people easier to travel. 私達は、他の人との道を歩きやすくします。 This is done in the loving and caring and sharing and giving and praying that we do. それをするのは、私達がする愛、憐れみ、関心、分かち合い、寄付や、祈りです。 As the Gospel lesson said a couple weeks ago, we help the hungry and sick and naked and lonely, so that, in the power of the Holy Spirit, this Christmas hope would guide them also. 先月の福音書の日課の言い方でしたら、私達は飢えている人、病気の人、裸の人、淋しい人を助けます。それで聖霊の力によって、このクリスマスの希望が彼らをも導きます。

Christ is coming! キリストは来られます！
