Today we celebrate All Saints Sunday. 今日、全生徒の主日をお祝いします。This is a time when we remember and thank God for those people who have died in the faith. この日、信仰の内に死んだ人々を覚えて、神様に感謝します。And we look to these people as models for our faith life. そして、その人々を、自分の信仰の人生の為に模範として見ます。
"Saint" means a sanctified person, someone made holy and pure or someone set apart from this sinful world. 「聖徒」と言う言葉の意味を定義します、「聖徒」とは「聖なる」人です、清くされた人です。又、この罪深い世から別れている人です。 In the Bible something or someone is holy, not because of what it is or what it is made of; but something or someone is holy because it belongs to God who is holy. 聖書の中では、人や物が聖になる事は、そのもののあり方や材料よりも、その人や物が神様に属しているから そのものが聖なる神様のものであるので、聖なるものです。For example, in my house there are some candle holders, but they are regular, ordinary candle holders, not at all holy. 例えば、私の家には蝋燭立てがありますが、普通の一般的な物で、全然聖なるものでありません。But the candle holders on the church altar are holy, not because of their design, but because they are used in the service of God. しかし、この教会の祭壇の上にある蝋燭立ては聖なる物です、何故ならば、デザインの為ではなくて、神様の礼拝、神様の為に使われているからです。 There is an ordinary kitchen table cloth in my house, but the cloth on the altar is holy because it is used in the service of God: the sacrament is placed on it, our prayer book is placed on it. 私の家には、食卓にかける普通のテーブルクロスがありますが、教会の祭壇にかけている布は聖なる物であるのは、神様のご用の為に使われているからです。即ち、その上に聖餐式の聖餐が置かれたり、祈りの本が置かれたりするからです。 The Bible is called the "Holy Bible" or “Holy Scripture” because it is God's Book, God’s Word. 聖書が「聖なる書物」であるのは、神様の御言葉だからです。People are holy saints when they are in the service of God. 人間が聖なる聖徒になるのは、神様のご用の為に働く時です。When we sing hymns or say prayers, our lips are doing holy things. 賛美歌を歌ったり、祈りを祈ったりする時、私達の唇は聖なる事をします。When our hands receive the Body of Christ in Communion, they are doing something holy and so our hands become holy. 聖餐式のパンを受ける時、私達の手は聖なる事をしますので、私達の手は聖なる物です。When we live our lives for Christ, our lives are holy. キリストの為に人生を送る時、私達の人生は聖なるものです。Then we are saints. その時、私達は聖徒です。 We are saints because we are connected with Jesus Christ, and it is the work of the Holy Spirit to make us holy. イエス・キリストとつながれている時、私達は聖徒です。そして、聖霊の働きが私達を聖なる者にします。 And this happens when we believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior and receive his forgiveness of sins. これは、私達がイエス・キリストを自分の救い主として信じて、彼から罪の赦しを受け入れる時です。
There are some really wonderful, good people who devote their lives to Jesus and do God’s work in society. とっても素晴らしくて良い人がいます。人生をイエス様に献身して社会に神様の働きをします。 Like Mother Teresa. Some people would have called her a “living saint.” マザー・テレサのような人です。「生きている聖徒」と呼ばれました。
But the thing that bothers me is that when I think of Mother Teresa, I see that she was just so very, very good. でも、私は思いますが、マザー・テレサの問題は、彼女はとっても、とっても良いからです。 Much better than I could ever hope to be. 私が自分自身のために希望するよりはるかに良い人です。Because I know that rather than being a saint, too much of my life is contrary to the will of God. 何故ならば、自分が聖徒であるよりも、私の人生のある部分は神様の御心に反するからです。So much of my life is being a sinner, rather than being a saint. 聖徒よりも罪人です。Rather than dedicating my life in service to God or to others, often it seems dedicated to serving myself. 自分の人生を神様や他の人の為にささげるよりも、自分は自分だけに仕えるみたいです。As we confess at the beginning of the worship service, "If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves." 第１ヨハネ１：８は言います、「もし、罪がないと言うなら、それは自分を欺(あざむ)く事であって、真理は私達のうちにない。」It is the human situation that we are naturally sinners. 人間の状態とは、私達は自然として罪人です。Even baptized, born-again, filled-with-the-Holy Spirit, confirmed, communed, blessed, come-to-church-every-Sunday Christians are still in the human condition called "sin." ですから、洗礼を受けて、生まれ変わって、聖霊に満ちている、堅信式を受けて、聖餐式を受けて、祝福されて、毎週日曜日に教会に通うキリスト信者でさえも、まだまだこの人間の状態である罪に巻き込まれています。 The trouble with sin is that it comes between things. 罪の問題とは、人と人の間に入る事です。Sin comes in-between people and we envy, fight, hurt each other and make life unpleasant. 人間同士の間に入って、私達はしっとして、喧嘩して、互いに傷つけ合って、人生をみじめにします。Sin comes in-between us and God and we want to rebel and to be selfish. 又、罪は私達と神様の間に入りますと、私達は反抗(はんこう)したり、自己(じこ)中心的(ちゅうしんてき)になります。We are neither like a saint in the eyes of others or of God. 他の人の目にも、神様の目にも、私達は聖徒のようではありません。 And that is why God sent Jesus and the Holy Spirit.ですから、神様はイエス様と聖霊を送りました。He sent Jesus to forgive our sin by his death on the cross. イエス様は御自分の十字架上での死によって私達の罪を赦して下さいます。He sent the Holy Spirit to create faith in our hearts that will accept that forgiveness. 聖霊は私達の心の中で信仰を創造して、そして、その信仰によって、私達は罪の赦しを受け入れます。
And so we Christians are going through life like Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. それで、私達クリスチャンが人生を送るのは、ドクタージキルとミスターハイドのようです。 In that story, Dr. Jeckle is a meek, mild mannered scientist who in the evening drinks a potion and becomes the violent, crazy person of Mr. Hyde. He is like a schizophrenic with a split personality. その話には、やさしい人である科学者ジキル先生は、薬を飲んで、夜 頭が狂ってミスターハイドになってしまいます。精神分裂症のようです。 Sometimes we are a gross sinner, sometimes a forgiven, perfect saint. クリスチャンは、時々ひどい罪人であり、ある時赦された聖徒です。 Sometimes we praise God for our eternal salvation, and sometimes we fear eternal death. 私達永遠の救いの為に神様を誉め讃えたり、ある時、永遠の死を恐れたりします。We are at the same time saint and sinner, or as Martin Luther said in Latin, "Simul Justus et Peccator." 私達は同時に、聖徒であり罪人であります。マルテェン・ルターはそれをラテン語で表現しました、"Simul Justus et Peccator." In ethics, things are either right or wrong, good or bad, black or white. 倫理学(りんりがく)には、ものは正しいか正しくない、良いか悪い、黒か白です。But a lot of people want to live in the gray area, because it is comfortable not to have to decide to completely throw away the bad. でも、多くの人々は灰色の所に人生を送ろうと思います、それで、悪いものを捨てなくても良いと思って楽です。 People say, "God loves me just the way I am, warts and all." 人が言います、「神様は私をこのまま愛します、私の顔についているイボまで愛します」と。But that is not true. しかし、それは違います。 God does not love our sin. 神様は私達の罪を愛しません。If he did, he would not have had to send Jesus to die on the cross to forgive the sin that God hates. 罪が嫌いなので、それを赦す為にイエス様が十字架上で死にました。We are not living in gray areas, but in checked areas. 私達は灰色の所に生きている訳ではないで、チェックの所です。There are only black and white, sin and holy. 白と黒だけで、罪と聖なるものだけです。
This is the dynamic of our lives. これは私達の人生のダイナミック、生き方です。We are at the same time saint and sinner, “Simul Justus et Peccator.” 私達は同時に、聖徒であり罪人であります："Simul Justus et Peccator." It is a very realistic understanding of our Christian lives. 私達のクリスチャン生活を理解する為に、現実的な方法です。 It is a contradiction, saying that we are saved and damned at the same time. 矛盾していますが、同時に救われていると滅ぼされている事です。But it is the powerful dynamic of God's love in our lives. しかし、私達の人生の中で、神様の愛の力強いダイナミックです。 The love that will wipe away our sins, that will wipe away our sorrows, that will wipe away our fears. その愛は、私達の罪を取り払って、私達の悲しみと涙をふき取って、私達の恐れを取り除いて下さいます。 In the midst of our deep sin and anxiety, there is the shocking, amazing, radical, awesome love and grace of God. 私達の深い罪と不安の中には、ショッキングな、驚くべきな、過激的な、素晴らしい神の愛と恵があります。
Today we rejoice and remember all those who have experienced this wonderful, amazing grace of God. 今日、私達はこの素晴らしい神の驚くべき恵を経験した人々を覚えてお祝いします。We remember the saints of old and the saints of today. 昔の聖徒も現在の聖徒も覚えます。And we thank God that we are in their number. そして、私達はその数に加えられているので神様に感謝します！
