I wanted to have a theme for this Advent and Christmas season. 今年のアドベントとクリスマスの為に、一つの説教のテーマが欲しいと思いました。 There are many great themes and topics: hope, joy, love, peace, and many others. 幾つかの素晴らしいテーマやトピックスがあります:希望、喜び、愛、平和などです。 I decided on the theme of “Peace” because it sounds just like another English word, the homonym “piece.” 「平和」のテーマに決めたのは、英語の「平和」と言う言葉は「ピース」で、ほかの英語の言葉の｢ピース｣と同じ発音するからです。 The first peace is when everything is nice and complete and whole. 最初の「ピース」とは、すべては平和的で、完全に安定している状態です。 The second piece, or better pieces, is when everything is scattered and falling apart and troubled and broken. もう一つの「ピース」とは、全部がばらばらになった、散らされた、崩された、壊れた断片（だんぺん）です。 We and this world lack peace because everything is in pieces: 私達やこの世に平和が無い理由とは、すべてがばらばらの断片（だんぺん）「ピース」のようになったからです。 our lives, the country, the system, the ecology, our hearts, our families, our health, our salvation. 私達の人生、私達の国、自然環境、私達の心、私達の家族、私達の健康、私達の救いです。 And so the challenge for us this Advent shall be, how can the peace of Christmas bring true peace to our broken world and shattered hearts? それで、今年のアドベントのチャレンジとは、私達のばらばらになった世界と心に、どのように誠の平和をもとらすか。 The Christmas Angels sang (Luke 2:14) “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” クリスマスの天使達が歌いました、(ﾙｶ2:14) 「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。」 Can we find that peace? 私達はその平和を見つけられるでしょうか。
A jigsaw puzzle has many pieces. ジグソー･パズルには、多くのピースがあります。 When you put them all together you have a complete picture. 全部を合わせますと、完全な絵が出来上がります。 You see your completed puzzle and have a feeling, a sense of accomplishment, satisfaction, and peace. 完成の時には気分が良いでしょう、何かが出来た満足感と、安心です。 Let’s use our imagination and look at this world as God’s big jigsaw puzzle. 私達の想像を利用して、この世界を神様の大きなジグソー･パズルのように考えましょう。
Genesis Chapter One tells us about the Creation of the world. 創世記1章は天地創造を教えます。 It is like God putting the world together with six pieces in six days: 6日間で、6つのピースで、神様はこの世界を組み立てられたようです： light, firmament, vegetation, stars, birds & fish, animals & people. 光、大空、植物、星、鳥と魚、動物と人間です。 And God looked at the puzzle he completed and saw that it was good. 出来上がったパズルを見て、神様はそれが良かったと告げました。 It was the Garden of Eden. それはエデンの園でした。There was peace between people and animals so that they did not fear each other. 人間と動物の間には平和があって、お互いに恐れがありませんでした。 Even work in the Garden was not strenuous, but a pleasure. その上、エデンの園の中の働きはつらい訳ではなく、楽でした。 Then in Genesis Chapter Three, Satan started to move the meaning of the pieces around and temptation and sin came into the world. そして創世記３章で、サタンはそのピースの意味を変えたので、初めて、この世に誘惑と罪が入って来ました。 It is interesting that God did not dismantle his puzzle and start all over again. しかし神様がこのパズルをばらばらにして、作り直しませんでした。 He added a new piece to curtail rabid sin: he added death. けれども、新しいピースを加えました。それは罪を制限する為に、人が死ぬ事になりました。 A person would no longer live forever and so would not commit sin forever. 人間がいつまでも生きないので、その人がいつまでも罪を犯し続けません。
Then Genesis Chapter Six tells us that people covered the face of the whole earth. 創世記６章になりますと、人間は地上に増えました。 His beautiful earth was coming apart because of the wickedness of people. しかし、人間の罪と悪の為に、この綺麗な世界がばらばらになりました。 God did not quite dismantle his puzzle into a million pieces, but in the flood he started anew. 神様はこの地球を、完全に百万のばらばらの小さいピースに散らしませんでしたが、洪水を送って新しく始めました。 Then in the post-flood era, to help curb sin, God added the piece that said that the lifespan of people should be limited to 120 years. そして洪水の後に、罪を制限する為に、新しいピースを加えたように、人間の人生が１２０年となりました。
Then Chapter Eleven tells us that as people spread over the face of the whole earth, their pride and ambition and foolishness spread was so great, as in the Tower of Babel, that to protect people from each other, he confused their languages. 創世記１１章になりますと、人間は再び地上に増えました。そして、人のプライドと野望（やぼう）と愚かさも増えました。バベルの堵はその例の一つです。それで、人間を人間同士から守る為に、人々の言葉を混乱させました。 People scattered over the face of all the earth, it was like a jigsaw puzzle that fell off the table onto the floor and pieces scattered all over the floor. 今度テーブルの上から床に落ちて散らされてしまったジクソー･パズルのように、人々が全地に散らされてしまいました。
And then God took one piece, the man Abraham, and started to put the world back together again. 今度、神様は一枚のピース、即ちアブラハムと言う人を取って、この世を再び組み合わせようと思いました。Genesis 12:2-3 says, “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” 創世記１２:２－３が言います、｢私はあなたを大いなる国民にし／あなたを祝福し、あなたの名を高める／祝福の源となるように。 あなたを祝福する人を私は祝福し／あなたを呪う者を私は呪う。地上の氏族（しぞく）はすべて／あなたによって祝福に入る。｣
Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, the twelve tribes of Israel, the nation of Israel. アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブ、イスラエルの１２部族、イスラエルの国です。 Then because of idolatry, that country was scattered and sent into exile, but God remembered his promise and brought his people home to Jerusalem to start again. しかし遇像礼拝の為に、神様はその民を散らさせて、捕囚に送りました。しかし、神様は御自分の約束を覚えて、再びのスタートさせる為に、その民をエルサレムに戻しました。
What we see here is a pattern to God’s love and faithfulness. これで、私達は神様の愛と約束を守る性質を見ます。 Even though sin breaks the world into pieces, God’s love works to bring it back together again and again. 罪によってこの世がばらばらのピースになっても、神様の愛は、何回もこの世を再び立て直します。 Then in Jesus Christ, God puts things together in a new way. そして、イエス･キリストによって、神様は新しい方法で物を組み合わせます。 Rather than punishing sin, God forgives sin. 罪を罰するよりも、神様は罪を赦します。 Rather than destroying the world and punishing mankind, God is making a new creation. この世を破壊して人間を罰するよりも、神様は新しい創造を始めます。 Rather than the death of people, Jesus takes the death of people onto himself in a new way of overcoming sin and death and separation. 人間が死ぬよりも、イエス様は御自分の上に人間の死をとります。この新しい方法で、罪と死と壊れた関係を乗り越えます。 There are some fancy theological expressions for this: “atonement, reconciliation, propitiation.” この神様の働きを説明する為に教会の教理の教えの中には素晴しい言葉があります：「贖い、和解、犠牲」です。 These big words get lost at Christmas, because there is a very simple word for it: しかし、クリスマスの時期になりますと、その難しい言葉を使いません。簡単な分かり安い言葉があるからです。 That word is “peace.” 即ちその言葉とは「平和」です。
