On All Saints Sunday we think about heaven. 全聖徒主日には、天国について考えます。 We reflect on those who have died in the faith, especially during the past year. 信仰を持って死んだ人々の事を考えます。特に、この一年間に亡くなった人々です。 It is comforting to know that Jesus has given them eternal life in heaven. イエス様は彼らに永遠の命を下さったと分かりますと、私達にとって大きな慰めです。 Then we think about whether or not we will join them when we die. そして、自分も死ぬ時、彼らと一緒になるかどうか考えます。 We wonder if we have the qualifications to be a saint. 自分にも聖徒になる価値があるかどうか考えます。 The traditional Gospel reading for this Sunday is the called “The Beatitudes” those blessings Jesus promises to the poor, the meek, and the peacemakers. この日曜日の伝統的な福音書の日課は、山上の説教の｢幸い（さいわい）｣の言葉です。イエス様が貧しい人や柔和な人や平和を実現する人に幸せを約束します。 However, if you have to be poor and meek and mourning and persecuted to be a saint, then we might look at ourown life and wonder if we really are a saint. しかし、聖徒になる為に、本当に貧しくて、柔和で、悲しみと迫害される事が必要ならば、自分も本当に聖徒であるかどうかと心配します。
On this Sunday, we want to hear about heaven and eternal life, but our hearts cling to life in this world. この全聖徒の日、天国や永遠の命について聞きたいと思いますが、私達の心がまだまだこの世の物を大事にします。 The promises of blessedness, riches, fullness, laughter, and acceptance are what we really want. 幸せや富や満足や喜びや友達の約束などを本当に欲しいと思っています。 We long for those things. その事にあこがれます。 The saints now have the glory of God’s kingdom forever. 聖徒達は、もう既に永遠の神様の国の栄光に入っています。 Yet, we still want to pursue those blessings now on this earth. 私達は、まだ、この地上の幸せを追求（ついきゅう）しています。
If we are trying to get those blessed things on our own, we might get them in a worldly way, but self-sufficiency does not lead to life in the company of saints. 自分の努力doryokuによってその幸せを得ようと思いましたら、世俗的には得られるでしょうが、自分だけの働きによってではその聖徒の交わりの永遠の命に至ることはできません。 If we think we do not need God, we will be outside his mercy. もし自分は神様が要らないと思いましたら、私達は神様の恵みを受ける事が出来ません。 When Christ turns the world up-side down, then where will our riches and blessings be? キリストがこの世を逆さまにする時、私達の富と幸せはどうなるでしょうか。 Which will remain? Will we have worldly blessings or heavenly blessings? どちらが残るでしょうか。この世の幸せかそれとも、天国の幸せでしょうか。 We might think we can become saints by our own work or by our own definition of “saint” and “saved,” but God’s judgment will be revealed. 自分の働きによって自分が聖徒になると思うか、自分で｢聖徒｣や｢救い｣を定義しますと自分が救われていると思うでしょうか。しかし、神様の裁きがあらわれます。 Outside the Kingdom of God, there is no eternal reward, no eternal peace, no eternal mercy, no eternal fulfillment, no eternal comfort, no eternal rejoicing.神の国の外には、永遠の報いがない、永遠の平和がない、永遠の憐れみがない、永遠の満足がない、永遠の慰めがない、永遠の喜びがありません。
A few minutes ago we read from the third chapter of the first letter of St. John. 先に、第一ヨハネ３章から読みました。 Here we are told that the love of the Father is so great that we are “children of God.” 父なる神様の愛が大きくて、私達が神様の子供と呼ばれています。He makes us saints despite our sinful selves. 私達の罪があっても、神様は私達を聖徒にします。 Through the death and resurrection of his Beloved Son, our sins are forgiven. ご自分の愛する御子の死と復活によって、私達の罪が赦されています。 As children we are given an inheritance. そして、子供として、私達は遺産をいただきます。 It is an inheritance that we do not deserve. 私達には、その遺産をもらう価値がありません。 But since Jesus became poor for us, to the point of being crucified, we are now, in God’s eyes, considered rich. しかし、イエス様は、私達の為に貧しくなりました、十字架上で殺されるほど貧しくなりました。それで神様の目には、私達は金持ちと認められています。 Since Jesus was meek, we shall inherit the earth. イエス様が柔和な人でしたので、私達は地を受け継ぐのです。 Because Jesus hungered and thirsted for righteousness so much that he died on the cross to forgave our sins, we are satisfied – that is, we are made whole, made pure, made saints. イエス様が私達の罪を赦す為に、十字架上で死なれたほど義に飢え渇く方でしたので、私達は満たされるのです。すなわち、私たちは満たされて、完全にされて、清くされて、聖徒とされました。
Because Jesus was the peacemaker who made peace between us and God, we are called sons and daughters of God. イエス様が私達と神様との間に平和を実現されたので、私達は神の子と呼ばれています。 Instead of amassing only the wealth, feasting and laughter of this world, we want the eternal blessings of heaven. この世の富、飲食、楽しみだけよりも、私達は天国の永遠の幸せが欲しいと思います。 We put our hope on Christ. 私たちの希望をキリストに置きます。 Whether in heaven or on earth, the purpose of our life, eternal life and temporal life, is to praise the glory of Christ. 私達の人生の目的は、永遠の命の目的もこの地上の命の目的も同じで、それはキリストの栄光を褒め称える事です。 In other words, the purpose of our life is to live as a saint.言い換えますと、私達の人生の目的とは、聖徒として生きる事です。
Of course we are still living in this world. 勿論、私達はまだまだこの世の中に住んでいます。 It is here that God calls us to serve him. この地上で神様に仕える為に神様は私達を招きます。 We serve him by listening to the words of Jesus. 神様に仕える方法とは、先ず、イエス様のみ言葉を聞く事です。 He calls us to love the neighbor, and to pray for those who need our prayers, whether they be friends or enemies. 又、人を愛する事や、私達の祈りを必要とする人の為に祈る事です。友達でしても、敵でしても、私達の祈りが必要であるので、その人々の為に祈ります。 He calls us to act in ways the world does not expect, that is, to live like a saint! That is, to live as a Christian! 聖徒のように、即ちクリスチャンのように、人生を送る事は、この世の人々を驚かせるでしょうが、しかし神様はこのために私達を招きます。 It is to pray for all in need, to proclaim God’s mercy, and though service to give that mercy to others. 困っている人の為に祈り、神様の憐れみを述べ伝え、奉仕によってその憐れみを他の人に与える事です。 In this way, God will continue to draw sinners to himself. このようにして、神様はご自分の所に罪人を招きます。 In speaking the word of God, others can also become Children of God. 神様の御言葉を述べ伝える事によって、他の人も神様の子になる事が出来ます。Through the power of the gospel, God gives the joy of life now and the joy of life eternal as his forgiven, beloved, and blessed saints. 福音の力によって、神様は今の人生の喜びをも、永遠の命の喜びをも与えます。それは、愛されて、赦されて、祝福された聖徒達の喜びです。
