GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 2:1–12 [The Magi visit the Child]
1Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’” 7Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. |

1イエスは、ヘロデ王の時代にユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになった。そのとき、占星術の学者たちが東の方からエルサレムに来て、 2言った。「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方は、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東方でその方の星を見たので、拝みに来たのです。《 3これを聞いて、ヘロデ王は上安を抱いた。エルサレムの人々も皆、同様であった。 4王は民の祭司長たちや律法学者たちを皆集めて、メシアはどこに生まれることになっているのかと問いただした。 5彼らは言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者がこう書いています。 6『ユダの地、ベツレヘムよ、／お前はユダの指導者たちの中で／決していちばん小さいものではない。お前から指導者が現れ、／わたしの民イスラエルの牧者となるからである。』《 7そこで、ヘロデは占星術の学者たちをひそかに呼び寄せ、星の現れた時期を確かめた。 8そして、「行って、その子のことを詳しく調べ、見つかったら知らせてくれ。わたしも行って拝もう《と言ってベツレヘムへ送り出した。 9彼らが王の言葉を聞いて出かけると、東方で見た星が先立って進み、ついに幼子のいる場所の上に止まった。 10学者たちはその星を見て喜びにあふれた。 11家に入ってみると、幼子は母マリアと共におられた。彼らはひれ伏して幼子を拝み、宝の箱を開けて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物として献げた。 12ところが、「ヘロデのところへ帰るな《と夢でお告げがあったので、別の道を通って自分たちの国へ帰って行った。 |
Gold and frankincense and myrrh. 黄金、乳香、没薬。These seem like strange gifts to bring to a baby. 赤ちゃんに与えるには変なギフトみたいです。 The common interpretation of the meaning of these gifts is: このギフトの意味の普通の解釈とは：gold because Jesus is a King and rulers always need money, 黄金ーーイエス様が王様で、すべての指導者にはお金が必要です。frankincense because Jesus is our High Priest who prays for us, 乳香――イエス様は私達の為の祭司であるからです。and myrrh because it is a medicine that relieves pain for a suffering savior.没薬――苦しむ救い主の為に、痛みを癒す薬です。
But still, those seem like very strange gifts for a child, even if it is Jesus Christ.そうでしても、イエス･キリストに対しての贈り物でしても、子供に与えるギフトとしては変と思います。
A few years ago (in 2013) we had a children’s Christmas pageant, 数年前に（2013年）教会学校のクリスマスの劇がありました。 and because there were not enough boys to play the Wisemen, we had three girls. 博士達の役をする為に男の子が足りないので、３人の女の子がしました。 Part of the dialog went like this:劇の会話はこのようでした：

Wisewoman 3: And Three Wisewomen would be wiser than those so-called “wisemen” in the Christmas story.３人の女の博士は、クリスマスの話の男の博士より賢いでしょう。 Wisewoman 1: First, we would arrive on time.まず、間に合って到着します。 Wisewoman 2: We would have cleaned the stable and help deliver the Baby.馬小屋の掃除をして、出産を手伝いします。 Wisewoman 3: And we would have brought practical gifts.そして、使う事が出来るギフトを持って来ます。 Wisewoman 1: Like cash.お金。 Wisewoman 2: Like diapers.おむつ。 Wisewoman 3: Like baby powder.ベービーパウダー。 |
But I was still wondering why the Wisemen chose to bring those particular gifts. しかし、どうして博士達がその特別なギフトを選んで持って来たでしょうか。 This is my own personal conjecture. これは私個人の考えです。
Gifts reflect something about the giver. ギフトは、そのギフトを与える人の事を表わします。 For example, if someone gives you a book about birds, then that person probably likes birds. 例えば、野鳥についての本をくれる人は、多分、鳥が好きな人でしょう。 If someone brings you homemade cookies, then you know that person likes to cook.ホームメード・クッキをくれる人は、多分、料理をする事が好きに違いありません。
Perhaps, the gifts of the Wisemen, although they may reflect who and what the Child is, they may also reflect who and what the Wisemen are. もしかしたら、博士達のギフトは子供のキリストがどなたであり、どの者であるかを表わしていても、同時に、博士達がどなたであり、どのものであるか教えるでしょう。 What I mean is, the gifts reflect what the Wisemen think are precious and which are unique to them. と言うのは、ギフトは、博士達だけが与える事が出来るユニークな物で、博士達は何が高価で大切なものかと思う事を教えるでしょう。 The Wisemen are probably from the area of Babylon in the East. 博士達は多分東の方のバビロンの地方から来たでしょう。 In the Old Testament Book of Daniel (5:7-8), the king’s wise men are called “enchanters, astrologers and diviners.” 旧約聖書のダニエル書(5:7-8)には、王様の（賢kasikoい）賢者kenja・知者chishaたちは、「法術士houjustushi、祈祷師kitoushi、賢者kensha、星占い師hoshiuranaishiなど《と呼ばれています。 They were probably rich and so would choose the gift of gold to bring. 彼らは多分金持ちですので、黄金のギフトを選ぶでしょう。 They were religious priests and so would bring what was important in their work, namely incense which is used in prayer. 宗教的な祭司でしたので、自分の仕事で大切に使うギフトで、祈りの時に使う乳香でしょう。 They may have been healers, too, so medicine like myrrh is something they would think would be very valuable. 彼らは医者でもあったでしょう。だから、とっても大切な薬である没薬を選ぶでしょう。
A popular Christmas song is the “Little Drummer Boy.” 一つの人気のあるクリスマスの歌は、“Little Drummer Boy 小さい太鼓の青年”の歌です。He wants to bring something to the newborn King. 生まれたばかり王様に何かのギフトを持って行きたいと思いました。 He has nothing but he says: 自分には何も無いのですが、このように言います： “I am a poor boy too, I have no gift to bring that’s fit to give a King. Shall I play for you on my drum? I played my best for Him. Then He smiled at me and my drum. Pa rum pum pum pum,” 「僕も貧乏で、王様に与えるふさわしいギフトがありません。君の為に、太鼓をたたきましょうか。彼の為につくして演奏しました。その時、僕と僕の太鼓にほほえみました。パ ラム パム パム パム。《
In 1958 this song became a big hit, probably because it taught a simple truth. 1958年にこの歌は大きなヒットになりました、分かりやすい事を教えたからでしょう。 Even if we do not have Gold and frankincense and myrrh to bring to the King, we all have something to bring. 即ち、私達には、王様に持っていく黄金、乳香、没薬がなくても、持って行く事が出来るものがあります。 We bring our selves, our talents, and the gifts that God has already given us. 自分自身や自分のタレント、神様が私達に下さったギフトを持って行きます。 We cannot go to the manger in Bethlehem, but we find Christ in all the world around us. 私達はベツレヘムの飼い葉おけまで行く事が出来ませんが、この世の私達の周りにキリストを見つけられます。 When we as Christians do the work of God, that is the same as giving a precious gift to the Christchild. 私達キリスト信者が神様の働きをする時、赤ちゃんキリストに大切なギフトを与えると同じです。 We do that in our daily occupations and recreations. 私達の毎日の働きと遊びの中でします。
So what can you bring as a gift to the Christchild? それで、赤ちゃんキリストに与える、あなたのギフトは何でしょうか。What in your life is precious that you can give to God? あなたの人生の中で、神様に与える事が出来る大切な高価な物はなんでしょうか。
Christ gave himself to us. キリストは私達にご自分を与えました。 That was his work on the cross. それは、十字架上の働きです。 He did not give gold or silver, but his precious life blood. 金や銀ではなくて、ご自分の尊い命の血でした。 One Bible word for “gift” is “grace.” 聖書の中で「ギフト｣と意味する言葉の一つは「恵み《です。 This grace is so great that it gives salvation unto stingy, selfish, sinful people like us. この恵みはどれくらい大きいかと言いますと、私達のようなケチで、自己中心な、罪深い人間に救いを下さいます。 One Bible word for “receiving” the gift from God is “faith.” 聖書の中で神様のギフトを「受ける《と意味する言葉の一つは「信仰《です。 This faith is the work of the Holy Spirit, and so stingy, selfish, sinful people like us become gracious, generous, justified people.この信仰は聖霊の働きであるので、私達のようなケチで、自己中心な、罪深い人間を気前が良い、他の人を愛する、赦された人にします。
All we have might be a drum, but then let’s play it for the Lord.私達が持っている物が太鼓だけであっても、主の為にたたきましょう。
