Merry Christmas! メリークリスマス！ We say “Merry Christmas,” but when the Christmas Angel first appeared to the shepherds, the shepherds were terrified! 私達は「メリークリスマス《と言いますが、クリスマスの天使が最初に羊飼い達に現れた時、羊飼い達は非常に恐れました。 It had been a peaceful night, watching their sheep in the fields near Bethlehem. ベツレヘムの町の近くで羊の群れの番をして、静かな夜でした。 Suddenly there was a huge big bright light. そして、突然に大きなまぶしい光がありました。 It was the Angel of the Lord that appeared to them. それは、彼らに現れた天使でした。 Sometimes we think of angels as been sweet little cherubs with wings, or an adult dressed in pure white. 天使はどのものでしょうか、可愛い翼を持っている小さな天使か、真っ白の朊を着る大人のような天使でしょう。 But I think the Christmas Angel was different. しかし、クリスマスの天使は違うと思います。 The Angel was on an official mission, and so dressed in the finest uniform with silver and gold and great dignity. この天使は重要なofficial missionで来ましたので、一番綺麗な征朊、銀や金に飾られて、威厳（いげん）dignityがありました。 Perhaps like a military dress uniform. 軍人の正式な/dress uniform のようでしょうか。 If it looked like a fierce Roman soldier, then the shepherds might have a reason to fear. もし恐ろしいローマ兵隊のようでしたら、羊飼い達の恐れを理解する事が出来ます。 If I were one of the shepherds there, I would probably want to make myself small and hide behind the largest sheep, holding my shepherd staff like a shield. もし私がその羊飼い達の一人でしたら、自分を一番大きな羊の後ろに身を隠すでしょう。自分の羊飼いの杖を盾のように持つでしょう。

The Angel had to relieve their fear by proclaiming the Good News. 彼等の恐れを安らかにする為に、天使は福音を告げました。 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” 2:10 天使は言った。「恐れるな。わたしは、民全体に与えられる大きな喜びを告げる。2:11 今日ダビデの町で、あなたがたのために救い主がお生まれになった。この方こそ主メシアである。《

To help them believe this Good News, the Angel gave a sign. この福音を信じる為に、天使はしるしを与えました。 “12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 2:12 あなたがたは、布にくるまって飼い葉桶の中に寝ている乳飲み子を見つけるであろう。これがあなたがたへのしるしである。《

And then another sign, which probably finally convinced them. もう一つのしるしで、確かに信仰が強くなったでしょう。 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”2:13 すると、突然、この天使に天の大軍が加わり、神を賛美して言った。2:14 「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、／地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。《

If I were one of the shepherds there, I would probably be eager to go into the town of Bethlehem and start searching for the child. もし私がその羊飼い達の一人でしたら、私もベツレヘムに早く行って、その子供を捜したいと思うでしょう。 And now, about 2017 years later, I would still want to search for the child. そして、今も、およそ２０１７年後、子供を捜したいと思います。 But Jesus is no longer a babe in a manger in Bethlehem. しかし、イエス様はもうベツレヘムの飼い葉おけの中にいません。 But I know where to find him! しかし、どこに見つけられるか分かります。 I do not have to go far because Jesus comes to me. 遠くまでに行かなくても良いのは、イエス様は私の所に来るからです。 That is the Good News message of Christmas in 2017. それこそは２０１７年のクリスマスの良い知らせです。 It is that Christ comes to us. キリストは私達に来られる事です。 Through the Word of the Bible, the Angel speaks to us today, telling us that the Savior has been born. 聖書の御言葉によって、天使は今日私達に話して、救い主がお生まれになったと教えます。 He is not a military or political savior, but the Savior that forgives our sins. 彼は軍隊や政治の救い主ではなくて、私達の罪を赦す救い主です。 He took the punishment of our sin upon himself when he died as a sacrifice on the cross. 十字架上で犠牲として死ぬ時、ご自分の上に私達の罪の罰を取りました。 When he arose from the dead on the third day, on Easter, he saved us from hell and death. そして、３日目に、復活した時、私達を死と地獄から救い出して下さいました。 And that means eternal life and salvation. それは永遠の命と救いです。 That is why his birth is so precious to us. ですから、イエス様の誕生が私達にとってそんなに大切です。 His birth is the beginning of salvation. 彼の生まれは救いの初めだからです。 Therefore the Angel said it was a message of great joy for all people. ですから天使が言ったのは、これはすべての人々の為の大きな喜びのメッセージです。 It gives us hope and joy and peace. 私達にも希望と喜びと平和を与えます。 That faith is the true peace of Christmas, and it gives all glory and praise to God the Father Almighty. この信仰はクリスマスの本当の平和です。そして、これはすべての栄光と誉れを全能の父なる神様に与えます。 That is the angels’ song, it is our song, too. それは天使の歌であり、私達の歌です。 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ、／地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。《
