Angels announce the Good News of the Birth of Jesus. 天使は福音であるイエス様の誕生を告げます。 So this Advent-Christmas-Epiphany Season, I want to look at the angels in the Christmas story. それで、今年の待降節･クリスマス･顕現節のテーマとして、天使について説教するようにしました。 Last week we looked at the Angel Gabriel as he met with Zechariah in the Temple with the message that his wife would have a son, who would be John the Baptist.　先週見たのは、天使ガブリエルは　神殿の中でザカリアの所に来ました。彼の妻は息子を産みます。その子供はバプテスマのヨハネになります。

Today let’s look at Gabriel as he meets Mary to announce that she will be the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God. 今日見たいのは、ガブリエルはマリアの所に行く事です。マリアが神の子であるイエス様の母になる事を告げます。

(Luke 1:26-29) 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.

(ルカ1：２６－２９) 1:26 六か月目に、天使ガブリエルは、ナザレというガリラヤの町に神から遣わされた。1:27 ダビデ家のヨセフという人のいいなずけであるおとめのところに遣わされたのである。そのおとめの名はマリアといった。1:28 天使は、彼女のところに来て言った。「おめでとう、恵まれた方。主があなたと共におられる。」1:29 マリアはこの言葉に戸惑い、いったいこの挨拶は何のことかと考え込んだ。

Mary thought that the words of the Angel were strange. マリアは、天使の言葉が変だと思いました。 In English, Gabriel says “Greetings—hello”, but in the Japanese translation the Angel says “Omedeto—Congratulations.” 英語の聖書で、天使ガブリエルのあいさつの言葉は普通の「こんにちは」のような言葉ですが、日本語の言葉は、「おめでとう」です。 In a few minutes we will see that the Japanese is a very perfect translation, but at first it seems strange. 数分後に、この日本語の言葉がとっても、ふさわだい言葉であること見ますが、最初に聞きますと、ちょっと変です。 “Omdedeto” is like “Happy Birthday, tanjobi omedeto.” 「おめでとう」とは、「Happy Birthday,　誕生日おめでとう」のようです。 “Happy New Year, Shinnen Omedeto.” 「“Happy New Year, 新年おめでとう.”　 “Congratulations on your graduation, Omedeto,” “Congratulations on your graduation, 卒業おめでとう。” “Congratulations on your marriage, kekkon omedeto” and the like. 　“Congratulations on your marriage, 結婚おめでとう”などです。 But for Mary it was not a holiday or her birthday, so the word “congratulations” seems out of place. しかし、マリアにとって、祭日や誕生日でもないので、「おめでとう」とは変わっている挨拶でした。 And so at first she did not understand the greeting, but also I think that maybe she did not trust Gabriel. その挨拶が分からないので、ガブリエルを信頼しなかったかも知れません。 Sometimes I get an email that says, “Congratulations! You are very lucky! You may be a winner in the Irish Sweepstakes! Send $30 and your bank account password today!” 時々、変なeメールが来ます。「おめでとう！あなたはラッキーです！何々ロタリーに勝ったかもしれません。どうか、３千円と自分の銀行の口座番号とパスワードを早めに送ってください！」 I am sure that just as today, there were scams 2000 years ago in Palestine. 現代と同じように、２千年前の昔もいろいろのサギが有ったでしょう。

But this was no scam. しかし、これはサギではありません。 Gabriel told Mary the plan of God. ガブリエルはマリアに神様の御計画を教えました。 Gabriel said,

30 “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”

ガブリエルは言いました、

1:30「マリア、恐れることはない。あなたは神から恵みをいただいた。1:31 あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むが、その子をイエスと名付けなさい。1:32 その子は偉大な人になり、いと高き方の子と言われる。神である主は、彼に父ダビデの王座をくださる。1:33 彼は永遠にヤコブの家を治め、その支配は終わることがない。」

Let’s look at these words. この言葉を見ましょう。 Mary does not need to be afraid, because the Lord is with her. マリアが恐れなくても良いのは、主が彼女と共におられるからです。 She is not “lucky” by chance, she is blessed by God. マリアは偶然でラッキではありません、神様に恵まれているのです。 She is one of God’s favorite people. 神様の特別の人の一人です。 God has chosen her to participate in the Plan of Salvation. 救いの御計画に参加する為に、神様はマリアを選びました。 The Plan of Salvation is that Christ must come to the earth and as a human being take the sin of all human beings upon himself and die in our place. この救いの御計画とは、キリストがこの世に来られる事です。そして、人間として、御自分の上に人間の罪を取って、私達の代わりに死ぬ事です。 Therefore Christ must be born as a human baby. ですから、キリストは人間の子供として産まれなければなりません。 And this is Mary’s part in the Plan of Salvation. それは、救いの御計画の中のマリアの役割です。 Therefore the greeting of the Angel is appropriate. ですから、天使の挨拶の言葉はふさわしかったです。 When someone tells us that they are going to have a child, we respond by saying “Congratulations,” just as Gabriel said. 誰か「妊娠して赤チャんが生まれます」と教えますと、私達はその人に、「おめでとうございます」と、ガブリエルと同じように言います。 Since the child is to be the Savior, Mary is to name the child “Jesus” which means “The Lord Saves.” そして、この子供が救い主になるので、その子供の名前は「主なる神様が救う」と意味する「イエス」と言う名前を付けるように教えました。 This child will become great because he is the Son of the Most High, the Lord God. この子が偉くなるのは、彼が主なる神様であるいと高き方の子であるからです。 He will become the King of Israel in the line of King David. イスラエルの王になります。ダビデ王の家系です。 But his Kingdom will be far greater than that of David, because he will not have a kingdom of this world, but an eternal heavenly kingdom. しかし、彼の王国はダビデ王の王国より、はるかに偉大なるものになります。何故ならば、彼の国はこの世のものではなくて、永遠、天国であるからです。

But Mary is still thinking in earthly terms. しかし、マリアはまだまだこの地上の事のように考えています。 She has not yet married Joseph. まだヨセフと結婚していません。 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 1:34 マリアは天使に言いました。「どうして、そのような言がありえましょうか。私は男の人を知りませんのに。」 She seems to accept the Angel’s message but she asks for more explanation. 天使のメッセージーを受け入れたのですが、もう少し説明が欲しいと思いました。　

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.”

1:35 天使は答えた。「聖霊があなたに降り、いと高き方の力があなたを包む。だから、生まれる子は聖なる者、神の子と呼ばれる。1:36 あなたの親類のエリサベトも、年をとっているが、男の子を身ごもっている。不妊の女と言われていたのに、もう六か月になっている。1:37 神にできないことは何一つない。」

In other words, Gabriel says that the Father of the Child is God. 言い換えますと、ガブリエルが言うのは、子供の父は神様でる事です。 He gives her a sign: そして、しるしを与えます。 that her relative Elizabeth will have a child. 親戚のエリサベトも赤ちゃんを産みます。 That was a miracle. それは奇跡です。 For Mary to have a child will be a miracle also. マリアの子供も奇跡です。 “For nothing is impossible with God.”「神にできないことは何一つない」と。

And then there is the miracle of faith. そして今度は、信仰の奇跡です。 Mary says, 38 “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” マリアは言いました、「私は主のはしためです。お言葉どおり、この身に成りますように。」

This is the point in the story when we today have to either accept or reject the Angel’s message. この時点では、今日、私達が天使のメッセージーを受けるかどうか決めます。 It is not only about the virgin birth. 乙女の誕生の事だけではありません。 It is a matter of whether or not we accept Jesus as our own King. このイエス様を自分の王として受けるかどうかの事です。 Will we confess and call Jesus our Savior or not? イエス様が自分の救い主であると告白するかどうかです。 The Holy Spirit created life in the womb of Mary. 聖霊はマリアの胎内で命を造りました。 Has the Holy Spirit created faith in our hearts or not? 聖霊はあなたの心の中に信仰を造りましたか。 Can we say with Mary, “I, too, am the Lord’s servant”? 私達が、マリアと共に、「私も主のしもべです」と言えますか。 In other words, “I believe in Jesus as my Savior.” 言い換えますと、「イエス様を自分の救い主として信じます」と言えますか。

The second part of Mary’s faith confession is important, also. マリアの信仰告白の後半も大切です。 “May it be to me as you have said.” 「お言葉どおり、この身に成りますように」と。 In other words, “Lord, let your will be done in my life.” 言い換えますと、「主よ、どうか、あなたの御心が私の人生の中になりますように」と。 In other words, this is repentance. 即ち、これが悔い改める事です。 God is changing our lives. 神様が私達の人生を変えます。 Mary’s life changed. マリアの人生が変わりました。 Our lives change, too. 私達もそうです。 The Holy Spirit creates faith in our hearts. 聖霊は私達の心の中に信仰を造るからです。 And that creates peace and love and hope and charity and kindness and forgiveness and humility and joy. そしてそれが創造するのは、平和を初め、愛、希望、チャリティー、親切、赦し、けんそんと喜びです。

The Christmas Angels will sing about that joy. クリスマスの天使達はこの喜びを歌います。 Let us join in their praises. その賛美に参加しましょう！
